The ETIAS is a new travel authorization system for British citizens staying for less than 90 days in the Netherlands. Not all British citizens need it, and there are specific requirements and exemptions. The application process is simple, but it does not guarantee entry.
Learn more about the ETIAS, its requirements, and how it affects your travel plans to the Netherlands.
Is the ETIAS a visa to enter the Netherlands?
No, the ETIAS is not a visa to enter the Netherlands.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) works differently from a Schengen visa. It checks everyone before they come to the Netherlands or any Schengen area country.
Authorized travelers can freely visit the Schengen zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Are all British citizens required to hold an ETIAS when visiting the Netherlands?
No, not all British citizens are required to hold an ETIAS in the Netherlands.
Those exempted from an ETIAS include:
- Dual citizens of the UK and any European countries that require ETIAS. Make sure to use your other passport when entering the EU.
- Permanent residents of the Netherlands or another country within the Schengen Area. Bring your permanent residence permit when entering the EU.
- Travelers staying in the EU for more than 90 days. Check with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for Schengen visa requirements.
What requirements do I need to apply for an ETIAS for my trip to the Netherlands?
To apply for an ETIAS for your trip to the Netherlands, you will need three main things:
- A valid passport
- An email address
- A debit or credit card to pay the €7 application fee
Once you have these requirements, you can start the application process. During the application, you will need to provide information about:
- Your education and work history
- Previous trips you have taken
- Medical history
- Criminal record, if any
If you are bringing children with you, they will need their own ETIAS too. Parents or guardians can fill out the application for them.
What is the ETIAS application process like?
The ETIAS application is an easy process that you can do from a computer, smartphone, or tablet.
Once you meet the ETIAS requirements for the Netherlands, you can start the application. It typically takes about 10 minutes and is all done online. You will need to provide the following information to complete the application:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Gender
- Citizenship
- Current address
- Email address and phone number
- The name of the first EU country you plan to visit
Aside from a valid ETIAS, what requirements do I need to enter the Netherlands?
Aside from a valid ETIAS, you need the following documents before entering Dutch borders:
- A British passport with an expiry date of three months after you leave the EU.
- A return or onward ticket.
- Proof that you have enough money to stay in the Netherlands.
Can I still apply for an ETIAS even if my passport is about to expire?
Although you can technically apply for an ETIAS travel authorization even if your passport is valid for less than three months from the date of application, you may be denied entry at the border.
I’m planning to go to the Netherlands, but I have no confirmed plans yet. Can I apply for an ETIAS anyway?
When you apply for an ETIAS travel authorization, you need to mention the first country you plan to visit.
Once you have your authorization, you are free to change your plans and visit the Netherlands and any of the other European countries that require an ETIAS.
Why did not receive my ETIAS travel authorization right away?
In some situations, processing ETIAS applications may take longer. You will hear back within 96 hours about whether your ETIAS travel permit has been approved, denied, or if you need to provide more information or documents.
If you are asked for more information, you will have 10 extra days to submit it. Once you have submitted the extra documents, you will get a response within 96 hours about whether your application has been approved or not.
If the provided documents are not enough, you will be asked for an interview. This interview can happen at the nearest Consulate to where you live or online. After the interview, the decision on your application will come after 48 hours.
I changed my name/gender/nationality. Can I still use my existing ETIAS?
No, you cannot use your existing ETIAS if you change your name, gender, or nationality.
An ETIAS travel authorization is connected to your passport. If you have updated your passport with changes like your name, surname, gender, or nationality, you will have to apply for a new ETIAS travel authorization.
Does an ETIAS guarantee my entry to the Netherlands?
No, an ETIAS does not guarantee your entry to the Netherlands. Although having a valid ETIAS travel authorization lets you get on your flight to the Netherlands, the final call rests with the border guards at the crossing point.
The border guards might deny entry based on national laws or security issues. They could also ask for extra documents to ensure that entry requirements are fulfilled.
